My husband and I stayed here last week while on vacation….we actually stumbled upon it. What a beautiful resort. We were pleasantly greeted by Pete the dockhand. He was very helpful. We were very impressed by the amenities, pool (pool towels are given at office) and very nice showers, bicycles for loan, Publix within walking distance. Harbor masters store and staff was awesome. We didn’t make it to Portofinos but will visit it next time.
        We will definitely be back.

The next morning the boats departed Palm Island traveling north to the gorgeous Longboat Key Club Marina and Resort. Due to an unannounced bridge closing on the GICW just north of the Venice Inlet three boats went out the Venice Inlet and proceeded north to New Pass Inlet returning to the GICW and into Longboat Key. Most of the boats were in slips along a sea wall less than fifty feet from the beautiful pool and a fabulous restaurant.

The next morning, breakfast was provided by the cruise leaders before members headed out on their own; some taking the Longboat shuttle bus to St. Armand’s Circle for shopping and the many fine bars and restaurants. Others opted to borrow the resort bicycles, ride around the resort, and/or pedal the 3-1/2 mile trip to St. Armand’s. As a side note, on the way to Longboat Key, one member drifted out of the channel, and ran aground in soft sand. Assistance from a tow boat got the boat back in the channel with no apparent damage. Such is boating in the sometimes skinny waters of Southwest Florida! Everyone knows how important it is to stay in the channel, but it is so easy to drift out. Two days later the cruise leaders drifted not more than fifteen feet off channel and ran aground. Again, a tow boat was called, and the boat suffered no apparent damage.

I would try the Moorings at Longboat Key. Stayed there for a few days, has pool, access to many restaurants as well as a quick 10 or 15 minute ride to downtown Sarasota. The slips are not as nice as Marina Jack’s (floating docks), but you’ll appreciate the quiet on weekend nights since Marina Jack has a huge restaurant with loud music on weekends adjacent to the transient slips. Shower facilities at both are pretty good.

LBK Club Moorings is top notch facility! We wish we had planned to stay longer so we could have taken advantage of all they have to offer. Dennis Matthews’ (Director of Marina Operations) staff are all very helpful, friendly and go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. Facilities are 4Star, clean and very well manicured. Very accomodating shuttle service to St Armand’s Circle. Will definitely be back for a longer stay in the near future. Make your reservations in advance and request “H” dock for short stays (closest to facilities, pool, ship’s store).

LBK Club Moorings is the only quality resort marina between Tampa Bay and South Seas Plantation. Everything is on site or nearby. Stunning place. A definite must do stopover for SW FL cruisers.

        Claiborne:
A couple of weekends ago, the indefatigable cruisers of the Venice Sailing Squadron, sailed up to the Longboat Key Club & Resort ~ The Moorings. The Marina is lovely & large with a well-marked EZ In/EZ Out channel off the ICW. The restaurant at the Marina, Portofino, has a great ambience & very good food that won’t break your bank. There are 6 other restaurants in the complex, plus tennis, golf, beach, heated pools, spa, & a shuttle to take you (& retrieve you) from St. Armand’s Circle where there is endless shopping …….
The staff was very friendly & accommodating inviting us to hold our cocktail ‘hour’ on one of the covered porches outside the restaurant rather than in the rain! All told, our VSS cruisers had a great time.
